Are You Burying Your Talent
by Marnie Pehrson

In Jesus’ classic parable of the talents, the slothful servant who was given one talent hid his talent in the earth while his comrades doubled theirs from two to four and five to ten. When this servant’s master came, he had done nothing with his talent. The servant answered his master, “I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth; lo there thou hast what is thine.” As a result of his slothfulness, this servant was sorely punished and the one talent he had was given to the one who had ten.

Why did this servant hide his talent? What one emotion resulted in his punishment? Fear! He was afraid of what his master would do to him if he lost what he had given him. So rather than use it wisely, he hid it.

Many times the Lord opens doors of opportunity for us to develop and grow, but along with those doors come opposition. As the American Patriot Thomas Paine observed, “we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; ‘tis dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods.”

That “price” is what makes many of us shrink back in fear and refuse to press forward. Many misread the “price” – the opposition attached to the opportunity – as the Lord telling them not to proceed in that direction. This may not be the case. If you have a strong desire to move in a certain direction, but you are uncertain about pursuing that desire, follow these 3 simple steps.

Step 1: Examine Your Desires

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is this a righteous desire? Is it in line with the scriptures – the revealed word of God?
  • Is my desire born of vain ambition? Or is it a desire to improve, to grow, to learn, to serve, and/or to make the world a better place?
  • Is my hesitance to pursue my desires a result of fear? Am I afraid the Lord won’t provide the means? Am I afraid of what other people might think? Am I afraid of failure? Am I afraid that I might appear foolish? Am I afraid that my feelings might get hurt?
  • Do I know beyond doubt that the course I desire to pursue is the one God wants for me?
Step 2: Seek Confirmation

Anytime you have a desire or feeling that you should pursue a course, but you are uncertain or fearful, go to the Lord and seek a confirmation to learn whether your course is correct. Study it out in your mind, decide upon the best course to follow and then ask the Lord if it is right. Pray and perhaps fast about the situation. If you feel a feeling of love, joy, warmth and peace about your decision, then you know it is right. If you feel darkness, doubt, or confusion, then it is not the course for you. Once you have a confirmation, you have a foundation on which to build. You can say as the psalmist, “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?” (Ps. 118: 6)

Step 3: Press Forward in Faith

Just because you now have a confirmation, doesn’t mean you will not face opposition. Anchor yourself to God’s plan for you – the confirmation you received -- and have faith that no matter what the odds or the obstacles, God will open a way for you to proceed.

As Ecclesiastes 7:18 says, “It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.” Do not let obstacles, distractions or the day-to-day busyness of life cause you to withdraw your hand from the path God has laid out for you. As Joseph admonished his brothers, “See that ye fall not out by the way” (Genesis 45:24).

It may take time for the seed you plant today to become the tree God intends. Most goals that are worth accomplishing take time because they require that you obtain knowledge, experience, associations, and wisdom that you may now lack. Give God time to nourish and grow the seed. Do not rip it out in a few weeks, months or even years if it does not materialize. Give God time. “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). We do not reap at the same time that we sow.

Think of Abraham when he was asked to sacrifice his son Isaac. The ram in the thicket did not appear until the very last moment as Abraham had the knife raised to slay his son. So also, we may be called to walk in faith until the very brink before the Lord delivers us. He’s teaching us to trust in His timing and how to walk through darkness by the light of faith.

Trust the Lord when He has given you directions for he says to all those who follow Him, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” (Isaiah 41: 10)
