Henrietta Mears - Founder of Gospel Light Publications by Patti Chadwick
One of the most influential Christian women of the mid-twentieth century was Henrietta Mears, founder of Gospel Light Publications and the Hollywood Christian Group. She was C.E. Director at Hollywood Presbyterian Church, developer of Forest Home Conference Center, and a respected Bible teacher who helped train almost an entire generation of Presbyterian ministers in America. One of the most important projects she ever produced was the book entitled What the Bible is All About that is still widely read today. Miss Mears began her adult life as a high school chemistry teacher in Minneapolis in the 1920;s. Her ministry began when she was asked to teach a Sunday School class at the First Baptist Church of five eighteen year-old girls, who referred to themselves as The Snobs. She took on this challenge and from that small clique she developed a class of over five hundred. In 1928, Henrietta offered a position as Director of Christian Education at the prestigious Hollywood Presbyterian Church. She accepted the offer, and from that time on she was involved in full-time ministry. When she began as C.E. Director the Sunday School enrollment was 450. In two and a half years enrollment increased to more than four thousand. Soon after she started ministering at Hollywood, Henrietta developed her own Sunday School curriculum. Within a few years she was receiving orders for her curriculum from all over the country. It was out of this modest beginning that Gospel Light Press was born. The late Clarence Roddy, a professor of homiletics at Fuller Seminary used to Henrietta as the best preacher in Southern California. Though she was not ordained and had no formal theological training, Henrietta Mears made as great an impact on the world with her life and ministry as any of the worlds greatest theologians.
